The Conflagration in Iraq

13th Feb. 05- Fighters attacked a U.S. convoy and a government building near the northern city of Mosul, leaving at least four U.S. soldiers dead. Two Iraqi National Guard troops were also killed.
* Gunmen assassinated an Iraqi general and two companions in a Shiah neighbourhood of Baghdad.
* In a battle just north of Mosul, Mujahideen fired on a convoy in Al-Qahira district, killing four people and wounding two. A rocket was also fired at the governor’s building in Mosul, killing two and injuring four persons.
* Two Iraqi National Guard troops were killed on Mosul’s airport road while trying to diffuse a roadside bomb.
* The bodies of two men who worked with Allawi’s party were found in a rebellious district of Baghdad.
* In the northwest of Baghdad, fighters killed two senior Iraqi army officers and their driver.
* In the town of Baquba, northeast of Baghdad, fighters killed a Communist party member who was a local councilor.
12th Feb. 05– A suicide car bomb killed 18 people in Musayyib, a mixed Sunni and Shiah town south of Baghdad.
11th Feb. 05– A suicide car bomb killed 13 people near a Shiah Mosque in Balad Ruz, northeast of Baghdad.
* A judge was killed by two fighters on a motorcycle in Basra. The judge’s bodyguard was seriously wounded.
* Iraqi police said they discovered the bodies of six Iraqi National Guards dumped on a main highway near the northern city of Mosul.
* Two U.S. soldiers were killed on patrol.
10th Feb. 05– A marine serving with the 1st
Marine Expeditionary Force was killed while on a security operation in al-Anbar province.
* Fighters shot nine bullets into a representative of Ayatullah Ali al-Sistani, the Shiah leader in Iraq. He survived the attack. His driver was also wounded
* A car bomb in central Baghdad killed three civilians.
* In other attacks eight Iraqis were killed.
* Two persons were killed by a roadside bomb in the oil city of Kirkuk, 250 km north of Baghdad.
* Two Iraqis were killed by a roadside bomb in Baji northern Iraq.
* An Iraqi army driver was shot dead in Balad, north of Baghdad.
* Three police officers were wounded during a gun battle with anti-U.S. fighters near the town Salman Pak, following a car bombing.
* The bodies of more than 20 Iraqi drivers and security forces were found in their burnt-out convoy south of Baghdad. A police officer said: “Until now no one dared remove the bodies which are swollen and decomposing.”
9th Feb. 05- A director of the Ministry of Culture and Housing was killed when fighters attacked his car.
* In Baghdad’s Haifa Street, three members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party were killed in an ambush.
* There were clashes between Iraqi and U.S. troops and a group of Mujahideen. Casualties are unknown.
* A U.S. soldier was killed in an attack on his convoy near Balad.
8th Feb. 05- A bomb at an Iraqi army headquar ters in Baghdad killed 14.
* A soldier was killed and another wounded by a roadside bomb.
* A U.S. military base east of al-Qaim town near the Iraqi-Syrian border came under fierce mortar attack.
* 14 Iraqis were killed in a mortar attack on an army recruitment centre in Baghdad. The men were signing up to join the country’s security forces.
* Fighters shelled the old Muthanna airfield in the heart of Baghdad.
7th Feb. 05- 15 were killed and 17 wounded when a car bomb exploded outside the main police headquarters in the town of Baquba.
* In the City of Mosul 12 police officers were killed and 6 wounded when a bomber targeted a crowd of police officers in a hospital compound.
* Ninawa police directorate in central Mosul city came under mortar attack. Three police were killed.
3rd Feb. 05- 12 Iraqi soldiers have been killed in an ambush near the oil city of Kirkuk amid continued violence around Iraq.
* Two Iraqi policemen and a soldier were killed in the city of Baquba.
* Four Iraqis working with US troops were killed and a fifth wounded in Abu Ghraib district, west of Baghdad.
