* Brigadier Butler, Commander of the British forces in Afghanistan said: “It got pretty close. We never actually ran out but that was the nature of the conflict. The guys were not starving but people were down to their belt rations. I think we might have been surprised on occasion how persistent the attacks were and how enduring the scale of the operation was. I think some may have underestimated the tenacity and ferocity of the Taliban.”
